Jim Hughes - Founder & President

Jim Hughes - Founder & President

Jim is passionate about safety and believes it is every British Columbian worker’s right to go home safe and enjoy the benefits of working. This is achieved when you are proactive, and go above and beyond standard “due diligence”. Jim is a health and safety specialist with a strong compliance background having worked 25 years in the construction industry and 17 years with WorkSafeBC as an Occupational Safety Officer and Regional Manager.

He is a COR-certified auditor/trainer in British Columbia and Alberta, and has additional training in CSA Z-1000 and OHSAS 18001. He also holds an oil and gas rig inspectors certificate and tower crane inspector ticket. Jim is a specialist in a number of areas including construction, government, heavy manufacturing, marine, and oil and gas. He is well respected in the industry and his safety programs, training, audits, and investigations are trusted by WCB, WorkSafeBC, and the local police. Jim considers himself to be a consultative partner, working closely with owners to build safety into their plan.

Laurence Svirchev - Safety Specialist

Laurence Svirchev - Safety Specialist

Certified Industrial Hygienist

Laurence Svirchev has been with WSS for two years, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist specializing in safety management systems, confined spaces, accident investigation, and risk and hazard assessment including hazardous materials management. Laurence has a record of winning appeals against erroneously-written orders by the Workers’ Compensation Board.

He publishes frequently in the peer-reviewed international Occupational Health and Safety magazine and Disaster Management literature, and is an accomplished public speaker. Laurence has a background in wood processing, steel fabrication, and automobile assembly. He has also completed a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health and Safety, and a master’s degree in disaster management. His professional experience includes a decade in occupational cancer epidemiology at the BC Cancer Agency and 16 years at the Workers’ Compensation Board as a Prevention Officer and Fatalities Investigator. In addition, he worked as Safety Manager, building a hydro-electric dam in Fiji and uranium mine infrastructure in Niger by the Chinese construction company Sino-Hydro.

Health and Safety Consultant, First Responder Level 3 with AED

Lauren has been with WSS for a little over a year, specializing in fall protection awareness training and fire prevention and safety plans. She has an extensive background in the construction industry, having worked in a fine cabinetry shop for a number of years. Most recently, before joining WSS, Lauren was a member of the Lions Bay Fire Department and this experience developed her skills in forestry, house and car fire suppression, auto extrication, and high angle rope rescue training. After an unexpected injury, Lauren took up teaching for the department until finally choosing to become certified in health and safety.

George Scott - Safety Specialist

George Scott - Safety Specialist

George has been with WSS since 2015, completing safety audits, and specializing in developing and implementing effective occupational health and safety programs and fire safety plans for clients. George’s more than 40-year history in the construction and manufacturing sectors has given him extensive knowledge of their operations. Over 30 years ago, he moved into the safety industry. He has since instructed courses in Hazardous Materials Management and developed WHMIS materials related to transporting dangerous goods. As part of his commitment to advancing workplace safety, George is active in the Lower Mainland chapter of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE), has served as Past Chair and was Chapter Chair for four years.
